Days 1 and 2

Saturday, May 3

On Saturday we pulled out of our driveway at 7:30 AM, stopped for a pastry at Beth’s Bakery in Sandwich. and headed to Glastonbury, where we would be having lunch with NIck’s family.

Arriving in Glastonbury around 11 AM, we picked up an order of bagels at Seed, our favorite bakery, and proceeded to Nick’s.

Our visit was very enjoyable, but too brief.   It was a summer-like day with temps in the low 80’s.  Back in the van by 2 pm, our next stop was Pleasantvile, NY, where we were spending the night with our dear friends Bill & Rosemary.  Bill is a fabulous cook and he prepared a delicious Italian fish stew.

After dinner we  drove to the Jazz Forum in nearby Tarrytown where we were treated to a fabulous concert by the five time Grammy winning Paquito D’Rivera Quintet.  It would be hard to say which of the performers was better, so I won’t, but when the show ended I purchased one their CD’s.

Bill and I toasted the evening with a wee dram of a single malt Highland Park whisky, and then said goodnight!

Sunday, May 4

Joni and I were up early, 6 AM, and on the road just after 7.  Driving across the Bronx, over the George Washington Bridge,  and south into New Jersey is very tolerable when you get an early start on a Sunday.

Our first stop once we picked up coffee and bagels in Pleasantville was Long Beach Island where I was fortunate to spend many a summer at my grandparents’ cottage in Beach Haven.  I’m sentimental, so I can’t go down the Garden State Parkway without a quick drive-by of my childhood haunts.  Joni is a good sport to tolerate such side trips.

We left Long Beach Island by 11 AM, and headed to Cape May where we stopped for lunch at the Mad Batter.  Having eaten there on previous spring trips, we stuck with  eggs benedict.  Joni opted for traditional style whereas I chose the Chesapeake version which substituted lump crab for the Canadian Bacon.  We were very satisfied!

Fresh squeezed OJ beats Tropicana every day.

At this point we headed to the ferry terminal where we had reservations for the 2:30 pm  boat to Lewes, Delaware, and the Cape Henlopen State Park, where we will spend the next four nights.

Departing the ferry at 4 pm, the drive to our campsite at Cape Henlopen State Park was less than five minutes.  It was lightly raining so we remained in our van, rearranging our gear, and then napping before heading to Matt's Fish Camp for dinner.

For dinner we focused on the local seafoods:  raw oysters and shrimp and grits

Dessert was with the compliments of house; berries, cornbread crumble, and vanilla ice cream.

 Life is good!
